Facilitating Access to Other Mental Health Services

We support people to access other services by providing information about the specific service so they are able to understand their rights and responsibilities when accessing the service.  We also liaise with service providers to negotiate the cultural needs of the person such as the use of interpreters.  We help the person to gain confidence in organizing their own appointments and communicating with service providers. We may organize appointments on their behalf when necessary. We provide the environment and the resources for them to feel confident to advocate for themselves and ddress life challenges.

This may take the form of one-on-one coaching and support to understand the issue that is affecting them and to explore options to address the issue.  For example a person may not understand the importance of a specific treatment and find it difficult to communicate this to the practitioner/worker.  Our first approach would be to support the person to assert themselves by exploring their rights and responsibilities in relation to the specific service.
