Friday Coffee group
We launched a new social afternoon support group for people interested in connecting through coffee and conversation. Many of the people accessing our services are socially isolated, alone in Australia with no friends and family. For others mental health issues have caused them to be isolated from family and carers.
Friday Coffee provides a
friendly unstructured social occasion between 1pm and 4 pm every Friday. No referral or booking necessary, just come along.
Team leader Beata Ostapiej-Piatkowski says it was great to see volunteers and staff chatting with people over coffee. “It creates an experience that is inclusive of all cultures in our community,” Beata says. “We know that social connection is such an important protective factor for mental health.”
Why Friday? The Princess Alexandria hospital’s emergency department reports an increase in the number of presentations on Friday evenings including people from diverse cultural backgrounds. After consultations with the hospital’s mental health and multicultural team we decided Friday Coffee would be an appropriate response to see if we could make a difference.

Speaking English in Australia is as important as having air to breathe according to our volunteer tutor Jawad Musavi, an Afghani who arrived in Australia a year ago. Jawad is leading our new Conversational English group on Thursday mornings. "We have migrants, refugees and asylum seekers all with different levels of English," Jawad says. "When they first come here they feel like a stranger. Being with people who have the same feelings makes them comfortable. They start to share their stories and culture. Meeting new people, making social connections is very important." Harmony Place also offers Conversational English classes on Monday mornings as well as a number of support groups including the Multicultural Women's Support Group on Tuesdays, Art classes on Thursdays and Wellbeing group discussions and activities every Wednesday morning. Check out our calendar. To join a group call us on 3848 1600. We will be starting a support group for men in 2014 so check with us in the new year.
